New threadActive writing vs SRS for keeping vocab fresh
I've been trying to find a better way to retain new words lately. SRS apps are okay for recognition but I keep forgetting how to actually use them in a natural sentence after a week. Lately I've been trying to write mini stories comparing similar grammar patterns and forcing the new words in there. It seems to help more than just flipping cards but it takes forever. What actually works for you guys?

Hey everyone! I'm struggling a bit when one word has like five different meanings. Do you guys make different flashcards for each meaning or just try to learn them all at once? I tried drawing crazy pictures for each meaning today but maybe that's too much work lol. What's your favorite trick for this?

I’m trying to get better at understanding spoken Japanese but finding big study blocks is so hard. Do you guys have any mini habits that actually work? Maybe something for the train ride or when I'm walking. I tried listening to podcasts but I get lost so fast. I think I need something super short and simple to start with.

Hey everyone! I keep mixing up words that sound super similar or have almost the same vibe. Like I learn one and then another one completely replaces it in my brain lol. I tried using silly mnemonics and color coding my flashcards but it's still happening. What actually works for you guys to keep them separate? Maybe drawing pictures? I missed four days of study because work got really busy and I feel bad about it. Now its hard to start again. I usually try to speak out loud while I make breakfast but I lost my rhythm this week. How do you guys get back into the habit when you stop for a bit? Maybe I should just do five minutes today so I don't quit, I'm not sure if that's enough though.

I try to practice speaking every morning while I'm getting my son ready for school but I feel like I'm making a lot of mistakes. Especially with the long vowels and double consonants. I listen to audio on the bus and try to copy the other passengers but it's hard to tell if I sound right when I'm alone. I really want to sound more natural. Does anyone have any quick tips for checking your own pronunciation?

I realized my mistake was thinking I needed a tutor to improve. Actually just narrating my day helps quite a bit. I recordng myself and listen back. It's painful to hear but that's where the lesson is. Anyone have other solo tips? I am trying to get better at describing scenes without pausing so much.
