need help not translating every single word

how do you guys stop translating in your head?? like im trying to learn words but my TRAIN just instantly goes to English. like i see the word for leather or skin and my mind goes blank. ALSO i was thinking about this while on the actual train yesterday after getting my paycheck and i totally forgot what i was going to ask... oh yeah do flashcards help or
