New thread名付ける is just another word that looks like five others
another day, another word that looks like three others. I thought I had 名付ける down. easy, right? to name. then 掲げる shows up in the same deck and suddenly my brain is fried. is it nazukeru? kakageru? katazukeru? who cares. they all just blend into some useless blob of stroke lines. I'm convinced nobody actually remembers these without guessing.
Jun 17, 20265 comments招く vs the swamp kanji is ruining me
so 招く is to invite right like the waving cat. but i keep writing 沼く which is swamp and now i told my host family i wanted to swamp them to dinner. also pronunciation tip!! its pronounced exactly like money-cue but without the y. moneycue. anyway then i saw 紹 for introduce and i actually threw my notebook. they all look like the same little guy doing a dance. help
Jun 17, 20264 commentshow do you link grammar things?
idk if this is a dumb question but how do you actually string grammar together? like if i want to say 'the evening is lacking money' do i just put the grammar points next to each other or is there a connection word? i tried using the 'and' thing but it feels super wrong and my sentences just look like a list of random vocab. wait do verbs even connect to nouns directly? help
Jun 17, 20262 commentsHow to fix your SRS after missing days
Motivation is a myth. You missed days so your retention curve decayed by exactly forty-two percent. Step one is you must immediately double your review interval for forty-eight hours. Step two is you queue fifty new cards to force the SRS algorithm to recalibrate. Step three is you lock your phone until the backlog is zero. Do not feel guilty just execute the recovery protocol.
Jun 16, 20264 commentshow to never mix up 在学 and 薬学 again
If you keep failing 在学 because you confuse it with 薬学 like a casual, here is your exact fix. Step one is locking in a 15-minute SRS interval immediately after your first failure. Step two is force-linking the 'zai' in 在学 to 'present' and 'yaku' in 薬学 to 'medicine' using an isolated card pair. Step three is running this exact loop five times before sleep. It works every time if you actually follow the system.
Jun 16, 20267 commentsthe busy week vocab routine is just giving up
The best routine is accepting you're going to forget it all anyway. Seriously, everyone hypes up these 5-minute custom decks but the second work gets high-pressure, the app just collects digital dust. I used to stress about keeping my streak, now I just let the reviews pile up to 1000 and pretend I don't see them. Just close the app and sleep.
Jun 16, 20263 commentshow do you guys not mix up similar looking words??
i keep getting so confused with words that look almost identical. wait is it true that if you study similar vocabulary on the same day it like ruins your brain's memory paths forever? i think i read that on reddit. maybe i should just stop writing and only do listening? but then how do i read? idk i feel so lost is this a dumb thing to worry about?
Jun 16, 20264 commentswait is 半球 the same as a half day off or the train?
so i saw 半球 in an anime and i think it means hemisphere? but wait i heard somewhere that it actually means a half-day off from work or maybe a train company?? idk i might be crazy. also i keep getting it mixed up with stuff like 簡易 and random furniture words like 家具... are they related? like is a hemisphere just a giant piece of earth furniture? please help im so lost lol
Jun 16, 20266 commentsreading and listening at the same time??
so i want to do reading and listening together to study faster. but like when i open a book and play audio my brain just turns off one of them? do i read the english translation while listening to the japanese audio or is that not reading? wait is this dumb lol how do you actually do both in one go without getting confused?
Jun 15, 20262 commentsfixing pronunciation requires strict srs mapping
Step one is syncing your audio mining tool to Anki. Step two is practicing the pitch phonemes on a strict twelve minute decaying interval. Step three is failing the card instantly if your tongue position is off by a millimeter. People who say you just need to listen are lying. You must brute force the muscle memory through active recall testing every four hours.
Jun 15, 20265 commentsSpeaking solo is just an SRS problem
First you must isolate 50 key verbs. Second you generate audio cards. Third you execute a 1.5-second retrieval loop exactly 4 times daily. If you delay by 10 minutes your recall decay spikes. Fourth you record your voice for automated waveform comparison. Do this for 90 days to force a breakthrough. Real conversations are useless until you memorize 5000 card outputs anyway.
Jun 15, 20263 commentsis 信号 traffic lights or like... a phone signal??
ok so i keep seeing 信号 and my brain keeps translating it to like... trusting a number? because of the kanji 信 and 号. but then my app says it means traffic light??? and then i mixed it up with 行列 because i thought that meant traffic too... wait is 信号 actually just a phone signal or a street light? how are these even the same word idk
Jun 15, 20262 commentshow do you stop translating everything?
how do you stop translating in your head? like if i see the word for farm, do i have to actually go stand on a farm to make my brain connect them? idk but someone told me to stop translating so now when i see a word i just try to blink really fast so i don't read the english meaning but then i just forget everything. is there a trick to like, force your brain to think in japanese without knowing what the words mean?
Jun 15, 20265 commentsthe "no translation" myth
People love saying 'just associate the word with an image, don't translate!' Okay, cool, how do I draw a picture for abstract concepts or niche vocabulary? I've tried Anki, I've tried picture dictionaries. Your brain is always going to default to English unless you've lived there for ten years. Save yourself the headache. The whole 'think in your TL' thing is just hype from people selling courses.
Jun 15, 20264 commentsWhy your vocab retention sucks (and how to fix it)
Why are you guys still struggling with this? It's literally so simple. You forget vocab because you're reviewing in the morning. Your brain only commits lexical items to long-term memory during the afternoon circadian dip. If you do flashcards before 2 PM, you're literally wasting your time. Read a cognitive science paper once in a while.
