how do you link grammar things?

idk if this is a dumb question but how do you actually string grammar together? like if i want to say 'the evening is lacking money' do i just put the grammar points next to each other or is there a connection word? i tried using the 'and' thing but it feels super wrong and my sentences just look like a list of random vocab. wait do verbs even connect to nouns directly? help
