how do you guys not mix up similar looking words??

i keep getting so confused with words that look almost identical. wait is it true that if you study similar vocabulary on the same day it like ruins your brain's memory paths forever? i think i read that on reddit. maybe i should just stop writing and only do listening? but then how do i read? idk i feel so lost is this a dumb thing to worry about?
