New threadhow do you deal with one word having like ten meanings
omg i struggle with this so much like when a word means star but also like dry or whatever wait no anyway what i do is i try to make a different face for each meaning like if its the sky meaning you look up and make your voice really high pitched like a squeak!! it actually helps your brain divide them up also just guess lol because context is everything but seriously the high pitch thing works try it
Aug 13, 20266 commentsactually drilling 名所 is so easy if you stop using flashcards
People waste hours drilling 名所 on Anki. Actually, it's just 'name' + 'place'. If a spot doesn't have a literal nameplate, it's not a 名所. I just scroll Google Maps and only count places with kanji in their names. Boom, instant drilling. If you're memorizing it as 'scenic spot' you're doing it wrong, it literally just means 'named place'. Stop overcomplicating simple vocab.
Aug 12, 20267 commentsis 陰 different from the other kage or am i dumb
so i thought kage was always 影 for shadow but now 陰 shows up and its ALSO kage but for shade?? or yin?? its so confusing i keep mixing them up and my phone autocorect keeps making it worse. write now im trying to learn it but i just think of yin yang and then i start thinking about 建物 and architecture for some reason lol. why does japanese have to have tow of the same word that look totally different
Aug 12, 20263 commentsis 理想 actually used by real people or just influencers
learned 理想 means 'ideal' but the only time i see it is in those cringe 'my 6-month japanese journey' videos where some dude shows his 理想 morning routine. does anyone in japan actually use 理想 in normal conversations or is it just for high-key deluded people? i feel like every time i try to use it i sound like a textbook or some preachy self-help guru. im so tired lol
Aug 12, 20263 commentsreading and listening at the same time is just double the pain
People say to listen while reading to acquire Japanese faster. Honestly, I tried doing both today and my brain just melted. I'm already on my fourth Anki reset this year and I can barely read a tweet, let alone process audio at the same time. Why do we even try? It just feels like double the exhaustion for zero progress. Is anyone actually succeeding with this or are we all just pretending?
Aug 12, 20265 commentshow is anyone connecting grammar naturally
I see those 19yo tiktokers claiming they got fluent in 6 months by 'just vibing' but I can't even connect two N4 grammar patterns without striking out. Real context feels light-years away. How do you string things together naturally without sounding like a glitching textbook? Or are the influencers just reading scripts because my brain is actually fried.
Aug 11, 20266 commentsThe only actual way to link grammar patterns
First you master the base textbook conjugation. Second you drill the prohibition form. Third you only use approved material. Everyone trying to 'naturally connect' things without finishing Genki is just wasting time and building bad habits. You have to endure the boring rules first or you'll never actually learn how to string a real sentence together.
Aug 11, 20266 commentsis 那 actually used for "that" or did my book lie to me lol
so i was looking at this kanji 那 in my vocabulary list and the book says it means "what" or "that" or something. but wait i thought what was 何 and that was あれ?? why is there a whole kanji for this if nobody uses it? or is it like a secret grammar thing? i saw it in 那覇 for okinawa but that doesnt mean "what" does it? am i dumb or is my textbook just completely wrong because im so lost right now
Aug 10, 20265 commentshow to actually memorize 賜 in two seconds
People write 賜 over and over until their hands cramp. Completely useless. Actually, look at the radicals. It is literally 貝 (shell/money) + 易 (easy). Easy money! A gift is literally easy money. Once you see it as 'easy cash' you don't even need to drill it. People overcomplicate kanji memory when the logic is right there on the screen.
Aug 10, 20264 commentshow to study vocab when life is literally chaos??
omg today was such a disaster my boss literally dumped like three new projects on me and then my dog threw up on my rug so ive been cleaning that for like two hours and i havent even eaten dinner yet anyway i have like 500 reviews piled up on anki and its driving me crazy because i have zero energy how do you guys even manage to study vocab when life is literally falling apart?? like what do i do
Aug 10, 20264 commentsConsistency is easy if you stop doing it wrong
Stop wasting time on Genki conjugation tables. Every native speaker learns by just 'touching' the language through passive audio while they sleep anyway. It's science. Five minutes of anime with no subs does more than three hours of writing kanji. Literally every actual Japanese person says they never studied grammar. Ditch the textbooks already.
Aug 10, 20265 commentsis the ending 'u' thing actually a myth??
hi guys! so i heard this thing online that if you pronounce the 'u' sound at the end of words you sound like an anime villain?? is that true?? i'm so lost lol. also maybe this is dumb but do i need to roll my r's? i think someone said japanese r is actually a d sound but then my friend said it's an l. i'm so stressed about pronunciation now haha
Aug 10, 20264 commentsstop drilling 走 the wrong way it's literally so easy
I see people writing 走 fifty times in a notebook like sweatshops. It’s a waste. Actually, 走 is a pictograph of a person with a hat running. If you just remember the 'hat' on top (土) you don’t need to drill. And stop saying 'hashiru' for everything, in real Japanese it's almost always read as 'sou' like in 走者 anyway. Just visualize the hat guy and move on, stop overcomplicating basic N5 kanji.
Aug 9, 20264 commentshow to start studying again after skipping a week??
ugh ok so i stopped studying for like 5 days because i got so confused about some random word for bank savings and then i just spiraled? wait is this dumb to ask but how do you guys actually open the app again after skipping? i feel like if i don't do it every single day i literally forget everything and have to start over. idk i feel so lost right now
Aug 9, 20266 commentsis 絞る really just for towels because my book lied
so my book says 絞る is only for ringing wet towels but then my tutor says we gotta 絞る our ideas for the project?? like how do you squeeze a plan. i tried to use it with my 父親 and he looked so confused lol. wait can you squeeze 醤油 out of a bottle with this too? feels like the textbook left out half the meaning. anyway there wrong and im tierd
