Question about synonyms for start

I'm having a bit of trouble with words that mean the same thing. I found a few different ways to say to start and I'm not sure which one to use. Is there a big difference if I'm starting a new book or just starting my day? I think I might be overthinking it maybe if anyone knows the simple rule for this I would really appreciate the help.
