Keeping new vocab from fading away

I’ve been thinking about why some words stick while others just vanish. Grammar is easier for me because I can compare structures but vocab feels so isolated sometimes. I tried putting reminders on my door or the left side of my desk but I eventually just stop noticing them. Maybe I need to link them to specific contexts instead of just rote memorization. How do you guys make those new words feel permanent?
