Keeping new vocab from disappearing?

I was reading about local history and farming yesterday and I swear I looked up so many new terms. Today they are just gone. It's so frustrating because I feel like I understand the context while reading but then the actual word just slips away. I tried making up a little story about a farm mishap to remember some tricky ones but even that didnt stick. Does anyone have a trick for making these stay in your brain long
