Kanji vs kana for fast note taking

I usually stick to a strict rule for my notes to keep things consistent. First I try to use kanji for the core meaning. Then I switch to kana if the strokes are too complex for a fast session. Finally I check if the word is common enough to recognize without the characters. It saves time but sometimes I feel like I'm getting lazy with my recall.
