Tips for telling apart close Japanese synonyms?

I keep hitting a wall with words that translate to basically the same English concept but have tiny nuance shifts in Japanese. Like, one means physical isolation vs emotional loneliness or a neighborhood block vs a zoned plot. Memorizing the dictionary definition doesn't help when they look so similar.
