why does one word have to mean everything

"Just use context!" is the biggest lie in this community. I'm staring at a card that apparently means five unrelated things depending on how the speaker feels that day. Is it a window? Is it a counter? Who cares. The "gurus" swear there's some logical root meaning but there isn't. It's just pain. I'm tired of guessing.
