How do you map words with multiple meanings?

When I hit a word with tons of different meanings, I always try to find a single core concept that connects them. But sometimes they feel totally unrelated and it ruins my flow. Do you guys just memorize them as separate vocab items, or do you try to force a logical link in your head? I feel like I'm wasting time looking for etymological links that might not even be there.
