how do you stop translating in your head??

okay so im trying to learn vocab but my brain literally forces me to translate everything into english first and its taking so long. like how do you just look at a word and know the vibe? wait is this a dumb question lol i feel like i should just know this. but like if i see a word for 'direction' or something my mind goes word -> english -> picture. is there a way to skip the middle step or am i just broken??
