Your Genki textbook is lying to you. They force-feed you hiragana like you're five. Every actual native speaker writes 一寸 in casual texts. It is literally the ultimate lifehack to sound fluent instantly. If you are still typing out the kana, you are just outing yourself as a basic tourist. Trust me, ditch the baby spelling and use the kanji.
