Linking grammar to real use cases

I've got my daily routine down but connecting patterns in the wild is still hard. First I memorize the rule. Next I look for it in articles. Then I try to write a sentence. It still feels disjointed though when I speak with my wife's family. I'm trying to find a more direct way to bridge that gap, trial and error is taking forever. Any tips for making it more automatic?
