Remembering vocab without translating everything

so im trying to learn words like singer or foster but my brain keeps translating it back and its so slow. how do u guys stop doing that?? i tried using pictures but then i get confused and eye forgot what i was saying... oh yeah do u guys use like flashcards with only images? cause i tried that but some words are too abstract hear. its driving me crazy there has to be a better way
