Telling similar Japanese words apart?

Hey guys! I keep running into Japanese words that translate to the exact same English word but have totally different vibes. Like words for food or neighborhood where one is casual and one is super formal. How do you guys memorize the differences? I've been trying to draw little pictures for each one on my flashcards but my drawing skills are terrible lol. Is there a better hack for this?
