Retaining abstract vocabulary without SRS burnout?

I'm struggling with newly learned abstract nouns. Like, I get the general concept when doing SRS but when I try to output, they just vanish. Do you guys map out semantic connections or group them by subtle nuance gradients to make them stick? Just rote flashcards aren't cutting it for the trickier nuance differences and it's super frustrating.
