how to not forget vocab (spoiler: you can't)

Everyone on here hyping up their perfect SRS settings like it actually works. I spent hours memorizing advanced vocab yesterday and woke up today with a completely blank brain. Mnemonics are even worse, I just remember some dumb story about a crab and forget the actual word. My only real retention strategy is keeping 50 tabs open because once I close them the words cease to exist.
