Kanji vs kana speed test

Just did a little experiment timing my note-taking. I used to think kana was always faster for quick writing but it turns out kanji wins for most 2-character words. The stroke count matters less than the pen lifts for me. I saved about 5 seconds per sentence using kanji for nouns. Only downside is when I forget a radical and get stuck. Does anyone else find themselves defaulting to kana just to avoid that pause?
