Retaining Nuanced Vocabulary through Context

Lately, I've been struggling to retain words that describe abstract concepts. For example, when learning terms like 背負う, I understand the literal meaning but find it hard to internalize the figurative weight of shouldering responsibility without constant review. I'm curious about the different study 形態 others use to bridge the gap between recognition and active use. Does context-heavy reading help more than SRS?
