Japanese synonyms with the exact same English translation

Is it just me or is it super hard to tell Japanese synonyms apart when the dictionary translation is identical? Like you look up two different words for "evaluate" and they both just say "to assess" with zero context. I usually have to search real sentences on Twitter to actually get the vibe of which one is formal. How do you guys parse those tiny nuances?
