My system for telling Japanese synonyms apart

I'm trying to build a consistent workflow for Japanese synonyms because they keep tripping me up. First I analyze the kanji components to find the core nuance. Then I check the register like if it's for writing or speaking. Finally I look up common collocations on Hinative. Does anyone have a better three-step process or am I overthinking it?
