reading while listening is just sensory overload

Some 19yo on youtube told me reading a novel while listening to the audiobook is 'the ultimate hack' for quick fluency. spoiler: it's not. I just end up losing my place in the text while some voice actor talks at warp speed. i guess my brain is just too slow to do both. how do people actually do this without wanting to throw their phone into a wall?
