Best way to pair reading and listening in one session?

Lately I'm torn on how to pair reading and listening in one session. If I do simultaneous reading-while-hearing, my eyes just hijack the audio and I don't actually process the sounds. But splitting them feels so slow. Anyone found a good rhythm for transitioning from active reading to pure listening without losing the context.
