Speed vs readability: choosing kanji or kana on the fly

When taking quick notes during listening practice, I always struggle with the balance. Kanji is faster for long words because it's fewer strokes overall if you use shorthand, but kana is brainless to write down. I usually default to kana when my hand can't keep up but then the review phase is a total mess to read. How do you guys decide on the fly without ruining your reading flow later?
