textbook definition of 識別 is useless

my book says 識別 means 'discernment' or 'identification' but like... in what world? i saw it in a sentence and it made zero sense. is it for colors? or people? why does every source explain it differently. i just reset my N2 deck for the third time this month because of synonyms like this. what's even the point anymore honestly. i'm just going to pretend this word doesn't exist.
