Linking grammar patterns in real life

I try to practice while doing chores like laundry. I know the basic patterns but they feel like separate blocks. When I want to say I did one thing then another it feels really clunky. I think I'm just listing facts and it sounds like a robot. How do you guys connect them more naturally in a real conversation. Any tips for linking things better?
