Mixing up similar words all the time

I am having such a hard time with words that look almost exactly the same at first. I see dozens of them in my study app and they just blend together, I really can't keep them straight. I think maybe I need a new way to practice. Do you guys use pictures or stories, or do you just wait until it finally clicks?
