Stopping the translation habit

I used to translate every new word back to English, but it just made my reading speed crash. My big mistake was thinking I needed an exact equivalent for everything. Now I try to link words to images or feelings instead. It's tough with abstract stuff but it works. How do you guys stop the mental translation loop?
