Keeping similar vocab words from blurring together

I'm struggling with retention when words are super close in meaning. Like, I'll learn two words for "homemaker" or "commander" and within a week they just fuse into one concept in my head. SRS helps with raw recall but not with the subtle nuance gap. Anyone got tips for anchoring those tiny semantic differences so they actually stick? I've tried writing contrasting micro-sentences but still forgetting which is which.
