Struggling with words that mean the same thing!

Hey guys! Oliver here! I've been experimenting with some crazy memory palaces lately, but I keep hitting a wall with synonyms. Specifically, I'm finding different words for things like 'staff' or 'returning' and I can't figure out the nuance. How do you guys tell them apart when the dictionary definition is identical? Are there any quick hacks to know which one is more formal?
