Best way to pair reading and listening?

I've been trying to do simultaneous reading and listening but it feels like my brain just splits the focus. If I read along with the audiobook, I either read too fast or get distracted by the narrator's speed. Lately I've tried listening first to get the flow, then reading the text immediately after to catch the exact phrasing.
